Muniyara, the dolmenoid hermitage, always fascinated historians, anthropologists and archaeologists. These rock monuments are part of megalithic age. There are many dolmenoid muniyaras around the area of Kovilkadavu and the cliffs near river pambar, a short rive from Marayoor. Muniyaras were were burial chambers made of four stones placed on edges and roofed by a fifth one called the cap stone. Some of these dolmenoid hermitages enclose more burial chambers, others form quadrangle walls roofed with cap stones. Muniyara is part of the rich heritage and history of Marayoor.
